The Baltics in regional and global media

The list of Nordic, Central European, and global media outlets dedicating considerable attention to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

There are three types of media on the list: generalist news and commentary outlets, regional sites focusing on art, culture, or science, and specialised podcasts. With a few exceptions, all publications listed below operate in neighboring regions of Central Europe or the Nordics. They dedicate some of their coverage to the Baltic States because of their proximity.

neweasterneurope.eu – the online version of the Warsaw-based bi-monthly print magazine New Eastern Europe that focuses on Central and Eastern European affairs and sometimes publishes exclusive reports or analyses on the Baltic States. Some of the online content is free of charge, but most of the texts are available only to subscribers.

emerging-europe.com – the news site of the Emerging Europe Alliance for Business Services, Innovation, and Technology. The organisation is an international lobby of businesses, associations, local and national governments, NGOs, and individuals representing former Soviet Bloc countries. The team behind the site offers reports and interviews and covers the important events in the region.

upnorth.eu  – the web magazine focusing on Northern Europe, that covers politics, foreign policy, music, art, design, architecture, and culture and offers its audience podcasts and videos.

tol.org – the source for news, research, and analysis that covers the region its editors still call “former communist countries”. Transitions Online is a continuation of the print magazine Transitions once published by the Radio Free Europe and Open Society Foundation. It has separate sections for each Baltic state. Some of the articles are free of charge, but most of the content is available only to subscribers.

arterritory.com  – the leading art news source covering Northern European art and culture. The website’s target audience is readers interested in contemporary cultural phenomena, and those who “want to make their life exciting and interesting”.

balticworlds.com – the online version of the Stockholm-based quarterly magazine Baltic Worlds. The magazine focuses on the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe and contains peer-reviewed analytical texts, features, and interviews by professional freelance writers.

fpribalticinitiative.substack.com – the geopolitical analysis initiative by the Washington-based Foreign Policy Research Institute. It focuses on Baltic defense and offers monthly reviews of current affairs relevant to the Baltic States. In partnership with the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies, the Institute also produces the podcast Baltic Ways.
